The rivet nuts that I bought are ribbed so when they expand, they grip the inside of the hole and the top of the hole, the black magic ones are smooth, so even to install them you need a star washer to keep them from spinning, no thanks. People use rivet nuts everyday without tack welding them. “The rivnuts you buy from Amazon are not for using on a Jeep Frame?” How can you assume they are not heavy enough? That makes zero sense. Wait, what? You don’t need to drill a hole to use them? That is not true. is the only place i have found that sells the correct rivnuts to do the job properly. The rivnuts you buy from amazon are not for using on a jeep frame they are not heavy enough and barely have any shoulder on them so you cant tack weld them to the frame. If the frame is rusted you will have to come up with a new solution. It turned out well and lasted many years. So i welded bolts to thick fender washers and welded them to the bottom of the frame. A friend of mine had a ruted out YJ years ago and his frame was thin and had no way of holding a new blackmagic rivnut. You ned need a drill bit or anything else. I will be replacing it soon though and i will post my experience with it.Īs long as your frame is not rusted out the black magic kit is the way to go. I bought a rivnut from them to replace one of mine that broke off but i have not got around to replacing it. You just need a nut and grind some teeth into it to grab the nut and keep it from turning. I don’t know how well this is going to go so maybe creating a thread is jumping the gun.īlack magic breaks sells rivnuts and you dont need a tool to use them. After watching a few Youtubes, I am just going to use a bolt and nut. It has 3.5 stars and many reviews saying it broke when doing a 1/2-13 rivet nut. I looked at hand rivet nut tools on Amazon and 1/2-13 hand tool is $69. I did one but I don’t like it so I am going to change it. You need to put a lot of pressure, drill slow, keep the the drill bit centered, and you don’t really know if the drill bit is going in parallel to what is left over from the bolt. I center punched the middle of one broken off stud, and drilled out the broken bolt, and retapped the hole. I got a few 27/64” drill bits and a 12-13 tap. I used almost 2 full cans over the course of 2 weeks with no results. ![]() I did drill 5/32” holes up through the center of the bolts and using the little straw, shot Power Blaster up in there to try and loosen the bolts. Naturally, if your bolts come out easily or don’t break, this thread is useless to you. I decided to post my version of the process here so maybe someone down the road can shorten their time and expense. I am going to be replacing my skid plate because it is bent upwards into the transmission and possibly causing a vibration.
